These douche-nozzles just ruined my morning: Microsoft sues Salesforce.com over patents.

Megacorps with extensive patent portfolios suing to protect their legal right to a monopoly. Somebody poke me in the eye with a lawn dart, please. At least Billy G personally has better things to do — like rid the world of dirty little mosquitoes.

Could someone please explain to me how this makes the software I use better? How does it promote technological innovation or advancement? Moreover, what do software patents contribute to the quality of our collective life?

I’ll say it one more time: “Software development is both a science and an art. Patenting any aspect of it is like patenting the pirouette, the appendectomy, the color blue, or a method to identify asteroids that may hit the earth.”

  1. Was going to send this one to you last night after seeing this posted on TC:

Microsoft Sues Salesforce, Claims Infringement On Nine Patents

    Gotta love this list…

    The relevant patent names are:

Method and system for mapping between logical data and physical data
System and method for providing and displaying a web page having an embedded menu
Method and System for staking toolbars in a computer display.
Automated web site creation using template driven generation of active server page applications
Aggregation of system settings into objects
Timing and velocity control for displaying graphical information
Method and system for identifying and obtaining computer software from a remote computer
System and method for controlling access to data entities in a computer network

  2. Maybe we should sue Microsoft for violating the “System and method for making an operating system unusable and unstable” patent.

  3. JoeT — that list of patents is so sickening to me, that I almost vomited back up the lemon yogurt you left in the fridge.
